An agreement between CIPFA and Rutgers University in New Jersey has created a pathway for graduates of Rutgers Master of Accountancy in Governmental Accounting programme to gain global expertise and practice government accounting outside of the US.

Under the memorandum of understanding, students and graduates of Rutgers Business School’s Master of Accountancy in Governmental Accounting will be able to qualify with CIPFA, through its online learning platform.

CIPFA’s chief executive Rob Whiteman said: “This MoU will enable the development and retention of top talent for government accounting.

“CIPFA is proud to support the next generation of public finance accountants, who will be the driving force for sound public financial management around the globe.”

Current students and alumni of the master’s programme will have access to the full range of CIPFA member services, including webcasts and training videos, events and networking opportunities.

Once they qualify as chartered public finance accountants, they will be supported by CIPFA throughout their career in public finance, CIPFA said.

Irfan Bora, director of the Rutgers Master of Accountancy in Governmental Accounting programme, said: “This agreement will help strengthen our graduates’ accounting careers globally, providing them with tools, training and membership.

“CIPFA’s expertise and ongoing commitment to working with partners internationally will put Rutgers Business School at the forefront of public financial management best practice.”

The agreement was signed on 27 February and the first session will be open to students in September this year.

To complete the ‘CIPFA pathway’, graduates of the Rutgers programme will need to work through two e-learning modules and a case study, concluding with an examination.
