CIPFA approves new governance model to reflect global membership

CIPFA members have approved a new governance structure for the institute, which chief executive Rob Whiteman said will help it change and adapt to meet the challenges of an increasingly international marketplace.

Proposals for change were set out earlier this year to reflect CIPFA’s increasingly global outlook. Council members are to be elected on a regional basis, including international regions, to give a voice to the institute’s growing overseas membership.

The changes are also intended to introduce a “leaner” organisational structure, with a stronger strategic role for the council so it focuses on bigger long-term challenges.

The package, which was backed at the annual general meeting at CIPFA’s annual conference on 7 July, will also make better use of honorary officer roles to more effectively support the president and the wider organisation.

Whiteman said the new arrangements “represent a critical step in helping make CIPFA a more outward-looking globally focussed organisation that truly represents its membership and all its regions in the UK and around the world”.

He added: “As with many organisations we need to change and adapt to meet the challenges of our increasingly international marketplace and so I’m delighted that members voted so strongly in favour of the new governance structure.

“They will stand CIPFA in good stead for many years to come as we drive forward with our vision of becoming the global authority on public finance and governance.”

CIPFA will now apply to the Privy Council to make changes to the bye-laws and the new rules should come into force in the autumn.
