Leaders of seven international financial institutions, including the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, have issued a joint appeal for global support for the report of the High Level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

The institutions have called for a global agreement to be reached to eradicate extreme poverty by 2030, in line with the conclusions of the high level panel that was asked to develop aims to replace the Millennium Development Goals that expire in 2015.

The report from the global institutions, A new global partnership: eradicate poverty and transform economies through sustainable development, says it is possible to eradicate extreme poverty by 2030, and calls on the world to build a global partnership to this end.

In a joint letter to UN secretary-general Ban Ki-Moon, the leaders of the institutions, which also include the African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, European Investment Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank, say there is a need for five ‘global shifts’ to meet this aim.

These include putting sustainable development at the core of the work of institutions so they can work to transform economies for jobs and inclusive growth, and initiatives to build peace and effective and accountable institutions.

They offered to contribute their institutions’ expertise to this, saying: ‘We strongly endorse the vision to end poverty in all its forms, in the context of sustainable development and to have in place the building blocks of sustained prosperity for all.’

‘We see investments in people, growth, and structural change as driving forces,’ they added.

The leaders also strongly encouraged full achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
