Carla Grasso has been appointed the next deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund as the next deputy managing director and will also assume the newly created job of chief administrative officer.

The chief administrative officer role was created to bring the fund’s internal operational and administrative management ‘to the level of excellence required by the organisations’ unique role and responsibilities’, it said.

Grasso, previously a World Bank consultant, will take up the post on February 2. She succeeds Naoyuki Shinohara who has been in the role since March 2010. His last day will be February 28.

In her new role, Grasso will oversee the fund’s administrative functions, coordinate the budget, internal audit and will lead its capacity-building and training work.

Announcing the appointment, managing director Christine Lagarde said: ‘We conducted an extensive global search for this new and key position at the IMF. I am fully confident that we have found a terrific manager and leader to be part of our team.’

Grasso’s professional experience spans both the private and public sectors. She worked at mining company Vale S.A., serving as vice president for human resources and corporate services from 2001-2011.

Prior to that she was secretary of the Brazilian Supplementary Social Security Office from 1994 to 1997, and also held several positions as advisor and coordinator in the ministries of social security, finance, and planning in the Office of the President of Brazil.
