This announcement comes as Cameron attended an emergency meeting at the European Council yesterday, where he called on other European Union leaders to provide new funding to help meet the urgent humanitarian needs in Syria and its neighbouring countries.
The new funding from the Department for International Development includes £100m for food assistance, clothes, water supply, housing rent, sanitation and support for children in both Syria and across the region.
Also, some £14.5m will provide assistance and protection in countries that refugees and migrants are leaving from and transiting through, including help for those already in Europe.
UK International Development Secretary Justine Greening added: “Our new support will give desperate people the food, clean water and shelter they need to survive on a daily basis where they are, so they won’t have to risk their lives fleeing the region and attempting the treacherous crossing to Europe.
“It will also provide immediate, life-saving humanitarian assistance and protection to refugees in transit.”
She noted that the United Nations relief programmes were “desperately” underfunded and that more help was needed in the short term.
She called on European leaders needed to come together to help basic needs inside Syria and across the region, while helping host countries cope with growing numbers of refugees.
