Eight African countries are to share in a $428m funding investment to improve their energy, transport and water networks.

The African Development Bank funds will go to Ghana, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, the Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire.

Specific grants approved include $120m for the Ghana Airports Company to help it  build a new terminal at Kotoka International Airport in Accra and the upgrade of other airports at Kumasi, Temale, Ho and Wa.

In Tanzania, the Dar es Salaam’s Bus Rapid Transit Project will receive $141.71m to upgrade the country’s road infrastructure.

Zimbabwe will receive a $16.15m grant to finance the second phase of its Urgent Water Supply and Sanitation Rehabilitation (UWSSRP) project.

The Gambia River Basin Development Organisation (OMVG) Energy Project, which will benefit the Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea and Senegal, received financing of almost $65m. The project seeks to promote energy sharing and improve electricity supply by providing renewable, clean and affordable power.

Côte d’Ivoire will receive a $14.4m grant to help restore its agricultural production capacity, which was destroyed during the conflict that affected the country throughout the 2000s.
