The CEF supports trans-European networks and infrastructure and has an allocation of €24.05bn for the 2014-20 budget period. It aims to support projects that close the gaps and remove bottlenecks in the European Union’s transport network.
Viola Bulc, EU Commissioner for transport, said: “Efficient, intelligent and sustainable transportation is essential to Europe’s competitiveness. With this new CEF call, we are not only looking for waterway or rail projects: we are aiming at creating jobs and boosting growth.”
Of the €7.6bn available, the majority – €6.5bn – of the funds are earmarked for countries with Cohesion Fund eligibility, in other words those member states whose gross national income per inhabitant is less than 90% of the EU average.
The remaining €1.1bn is available to all member states who are being especially encouraged to come forward with ideas for intelligent transport or traffic management systems.
Support will be granted on a competitive basis in the form of EU co-financing, following a thorough evaluation and selection process. The outcome will be published by the summer of 2016.
