Accountants who qualify at the University of Malaya will now be exempt from certain exams to complete the CIPFA International Public Financial Management qualification.

CIPFA announced Wednesday that it has presented the University of Malay with exemptions for its bachelor of accounting programme in Kuala Lumpur.

Graduates will be eligible to up to nine exemptions from the CIPFA IPFM programme and will only need to complete three remaining modules and meet the practical work experience requirements.

CIPFA’s Ian Carruthers said:  “It is fantastic news that CIPFA and University of Malaya have come together to create an accelerated route for graduates.

“Through the agreement, CIPFA and UM will ensure there are the skills and capacity in place to help implement International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) and accrual accounting.”

Once graduates have completed the CIPFA modules, they will be able to apply for a full CIPFA membership.

Graduates from the accounting degree will be entitled to exemptions from the following IPFM exams:

-       Financial accounting

-       Management accounting

-       Audit and assurance

-       Public finance

-       Strategy and policy

-       Company financial reporting

Graduates who take a further three options at the university, treasury management, operations management and operations management will also be eligible to exemptions from the financial management, business and change management, and governance, public policy and ethics exams.

Research, co-released by CIPFA, found that accountants around the world consider grant misspending to be the top public sector fraud
