Sudan will receive $41m to modernise farming

The African Development Bank has signed an agreement with Sudan that will grant the country $41m to modernise its agricultural system.

The finance will help fund a public sector initiative, dubbed the Agriculture Value Chain Development Project, aiming to improve household incomes, food security and climate resilience.

The project will help Sudan to develop infrastructure and measures to increase trade and boost market access for farm produce, the bank said.

It is in line with Sudan’s Economic Reform Programme, passed by the country’s parliament in 2014, which aims to achieve sustainable and inclusive growth through the expansion of agriculture and the exploitation of natural resources.

Oil, agriculture and livestock are essential to Sudan’s economic diversification. These sectors account for up to 35–40% of the country’s GDP, but the World Bank said that with greater investment and better governance this could be increased.
