EU releases fresh funding for Central Asia development work

26 Nov 18

Sustainable development projects in Central Asia have been given a €124m funding boost from the European Commission.

The projects will help protect the environment, tackle climate change and promote the rule of law across the region.

The funding also includes a bilateral programme with Kyrgyzstan worth €36m, which will make education policies more transparent, inclusive and cost-effective, helping improve the job market.

Commissioner for international cooperation and development Neven Mimica said: “These programmes worth €124m in total will support jobs and sustainable development in our partner countries across Central Asia.”

Of the regional programmes, a €31.2m project will boost job creation by supporting the role of the private sector and trade in sustainable development, the statement said.

“Through this programme, the EU will provide strategic advice and training to help the governments make their countries regulatory frameworks more conducive for business,” the commission said.

€7m has been allocated to promote energy and water supply through national and regional work, such as data generation and strengthening national and regional organisations.
