Clean water collection
The Results-based Scaling up Rural Sanitation and Water Supply Programme aims to improve water supply to 255,000 households and improve sanitation and water supply facilities at 2,720 schools and clinics in 21 provinces in the Northern Mountains and Central Highlands Region ‒among the poorest rural areas in Vietnam.
Victoria Kwakwa, World Bank country director for Vietnam, said: “Overall Vietnam has made progress in broadening water supply and sanitation coverage, but important regional differences remain.
“In regions that lag behind, the lack of access to basic services, together with poor hygiene practices, leads to serious health issues.”
The bank’s Program for Results financing instrument will link the disbursement of funds in the programme to the delivery of verifiable results, making the programme the third results-based project supported by the World Bank in Vietnam.
The $200m of credit comes from the International Development Association – the bank’s fund for the world’s poorest countries.
The Vietnamese government will provide a further $25.5m. The sanitation and water supply programme will help Vietnam meet its own national target in this area as well as the Millennium Development Goals and the new Sustainable Development Goals.
