The country’s anti-graft court indicted the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif today, opening a trial that could see the pair jailed.

Sharif first appeared in court last month on three corruption charges. But the former PM said the proceedings were biased and the corruption claims politically motivated. He was then expected to be indicted on October 2.

Reuters reported that Sharif, his daughter and her husband had all been indicted by the court of the anti-corruption agency, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

They all pleaded not guilty. Sharif, who held office twice in the 1990s as well from 2013 until his recent ousting, sent a representative to court as he was reportedly with his wife in the UK where she receives cancer treatment.

 Sharif resigned in July after being declared unfit for office following a corruption probe.

The allegations stemmed from the Panama Papers leaked in 2016, which showed that his daughter and two sons held offshore holding companies in the British Virgin Islands and used them to buy flats in London.

The Supreme Court first declined to dismiss Sharif and ordered an investigation into his family’s wealth.

The Court has ordered the trial to be concluded within six months.
