The National Accountability Bureau court gave its verdict today after a series of delays. As well as the 10-year prison Sharif has been ordered to pay a fine of $10.6m, it has been reported. 

Sharif, who was ousted as prime minister last year, had previously filed to delay the ruling while he was in London with his wife, where she received medical treatment.

He has called the charges politically motivated and biased.

Sharif first appeared in court in September on three corruption charges. His daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif and her husband Mouhammad Safdar had also been indicted by the court of the anti-corruption agency. All three of them pleaded not guilty.

Sharif’s daughter was sentenced to seven years and a fine of $2.6m, while her husband was given a one-year prison sentence.

A Supreme Court Panel alleged the former prime minister’s family’s wealth to exceed their legal income following the ‘Panama Papers’ scandal. This revealed that Sharif and his children owned undeclared offshore companies and assets, including four properties in London. 

In July, Sharif was disqualified from being a member of the Pakistani Parliament, after the court said he was “not honest”.

Campaign group Transparency International urged UK authorities to seize Sharif’s property in the country following the corruption probe.
